The St Kitts and Nevis National Carnival Committee has extended their best deep condolences on the passing of carnival legend, Stanley Franks Jr. Stanley was a true icon of Carnival who dedicated over 60 years of his life to the vibrant end of year celebrations.
The organization has paid tribute to the life and contribution of Stanley Franks Jr. They claimed, he was not just a part of this cultural extravaganza he was a champion of its evolution and growth. From its humble beginnings in 1957 to the momentous occasion when our carnival was nationalized in 1971 and later rebranded into Sugar Mas Stanley was there, a constant presence throughout the decades.
His contributions to our carnival extended across various roles, each executed with excellence and passion. Stanley was a true artist, a costume builder par excellence who added vivid colors and spectacular designs to countless troupes.
He also showcased his talent and creativity by crafting magnificent costumes and props for contestants in the talented teen and national queen pageants as well as for calypsonians.
But Stanley Franks Jr’s involvement didn’t stop at the artistry of costumes and props. From the 1950s to the late 1970s, he was the man who ensured that the carnival grounds and stages were ready for performances, an unassuming yet vital role in bringing carnival to life.
His dedication was further recognized when he was selected to serve as the Chairman of the National Carnival Committee in 1995.
Yet, despite the numerous roles and responsibilities, he was an integral part of the musical landscape during the vibrant 1960s, lending his talents and dedication to several renowned combos and steel bands. He always found time to immerse himself in the true spirit of carnival.
Jouvert Morning and Parade Day would find Stanley Franks Jr on the streets, reveling in the joyous atmosphere, dancing to the infectious rhythms and sharing laughter with friends and strangers alike. In his later years, it came as no surprise that Stanley was often called upon to serve as a judge for various carnival competitions.
He was a living repository of historical knowledge about our carnival, a walking encyclopedia of stories and traditions. His invaluable insights allowed us to truly appreciate the deep-rooted history of our carnival and its significance.
Stanley was honored with the prestigious Gold Standard Award at the inaugural Sugar Mas Awards in November 2022. This award was a heartfelt recognition of his meritorious service to Carnival, spanning his entire lifetime and covering various critical aspects of its operation.
In addition to his profound contributions to our carnival, Stanley also played integral roles in the St. Kitts Music Festival, where Stanley Franks Jr served as Co-Chair for several years.
Beyond the realms of culture and music, he served at the highest level on Independence Celebrations Committee and contributed significantly to the St. Kitts and Nevis Trades & Labour Union and several sporting and charitable organizations.
Stanley Franks Jr.’s enduring legacy is etched into the very fabric of our nation and his impact on our cultural and community endeavors will continue to resonate for generations to come.
