St Kitts and Nevis is ready to celebrate the 39th anniversary of their Independence from the colonisation of Great Britain. The 39th year of freedom will be celebrated under the theme of “Refocus, Re-Create, Redesign: Independence 39”. The theme was chosen from 431 entries submitted by the country’s residents and citizens, and Xavienne Roma Richardson of St Kitts won the competition.

During her “working for you” appearance on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, the winner of the theme competition, Richardson, explained what inspired her to submit her theme.

She stated that When she saw the Independence Theme Slogan Competition come up, she thought that maybe this was her chance.

Playing on her passion for language and literature, Ms Richardson added that at first, she thought of what would rhyme with 39, seeing that this year marks the 39th anniversary of St Kitts and Nevis gaining their Independence.

First, The winner of the theme competition stated that she thought about the words that could fit, and then about my vision for the country at least for the next five years since we are talking about terms of government. Finally, what her vision was for the people of the country in general.

She also confessed to feeling that St Kitts and Nevis has gone a bit off course in the last few years.

She stated, “I remember when St Kitts and Nevis was the envy of the region, so many people moved to the country because we were thriving and doing well.”

She stated that this was why there was the “re” in her theme. It was because we had to come back on track, regain some of the momenta that we had lost, refocus, re-create, and redesign a future that reflected sustainability, development of our people for all of our people.”

She also stated that (her) winning theme spoke about rebuilding St Kitts and Nevis. The theme is not about starting from scratch. However, we need to be more innovative, thoughtful, considerate and accountable. Ms Richardson stated that we need to get back on track and re-instate St Kitts and Nevis as the envy of the region.

Ms Xavienne Roma Richardson was presented with a cash prize of EC $1000.00. for winning the competition. She expressed her heartfelt thanks to the Independence Committee for choosing her slogan.

A total of 413 submissions were received from the 3-day Independence Theme competition. Entries were accepted from persons of all ages who are citizens and residents of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
