Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew has spoken at length about climate change during his trip to Jamaica for the 49th Meeting of the CARICOM. The Prime Minister presented the side of the small island nations when it comes to the climate crisis.

The Prime Minister highlighted that they are not responsible for the creation of the climate crisis. However, they are the ones facing the consequences for the climate crisis

The Prime Minister has shared that it is important for the members of the international community to understand the severity of the problem for the people living in the Caribbean. He noted that months of the Trans-Atlantic hurricane season are extremely crucial for the region.

It is difficult to ascertain when a hurricane will hit a particular country, which country will be the next to be hit or how much damage hurricanes will cause. Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew acknowledged that the rehabilitation and rebuilding after being hit by a hurricane can take years.

As such, while speaking to the international community, Dr Terrance Drew asked for accountability and justice. The Prime Minister said that they are not relenting on their efforts to seek justice.

The Prime Minister also added that it was important for the world leaders to make sure that the small islands are supported during the recovery period after a hurricane. The GDP of the countries hit by the hurricanes is set back by decades.

The climate change affects the development of the countries within the Caribbean region. The tourism sector, health, infrastructure, growth opportunities of the Caribbean nations face setbacks due to climate crisis.

The Prime Minister said that climate change is a matter of justice and not sympathy. In his address, PM Drew said that the Caribbean did not cause climate change but the region is facing the most serious consequences.

He has asked the international stakeholders to take responsibility for their role in climate change. The Caribbean region, according to Dr Terrance Drew suffers significantly due to climate change and the patterns need  to change.
