Basseterre, St Kitts: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew urged the citizens to register and take full advantage of the Sanitary Assistance Program (SAP), which focuses on eradicating pit latrines throughout St Kitts and Nevis.
The Prime Minister shared that the sanitation program is being expanded free of cost to support the most vulnerable citizens at an event promoting the governments’ Sanitation Assistance Program (SAP).
PM Drew shared glimpses of the event through his official Facebook account and expressed how the times have changed since he has become a candidate to now.
He noted that in 2013, when he became a candidate, he visited an area in his constituency where a resident had no toilet facilities and was forced to use plastic bags as a makeshift toilet. He mentioned that he immediately raised the issue with the Labour administration, which led to the launch of an initiative to eliminate pit latrines and provide modern toilet facilities to those in need.
Prime Minister Drew shared that the SAP is really taking St Kitts and Nevis to the next level. He stated that their objective is to eradicate pit latrines from the country.
“Our country is a modern country, a high-income country, one of the most educated CARICOM, ranking highest in the Human Development Index. It means we must do what is necessary to reflect that status.”
PM Drew delivered remarks and shared personal life experiences to highlight the vitality of the Sanitary Assistance Program.
Notably, the Sanitation Assistance Program, managed by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Settlement and the Department of Constituency Empowerment, makes ensure that even the most vulnerable citizens have access to sanitary bathroom facilities.
Prime Minister Drew also thanked the Deputy Prime Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley, the Ministry of Human Settlement, NHC, and Constituency Empowerment for their dedication to this cause of eradicating pit latrines in our country.
PM Drew urged citizens to take advantage of the program and register, emphasizing on the government’s dedication to fostering a society where all people can live with dignity and security.
