Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew encouraged the citizens of St Kitts and Nevis towards backyard gardening. He shared a picture of his banana trees, which he sowed during the Covid lockdown. The plant is continuously growing and bearing fruits.
In an extensive social media post, earlier on Sunday PM Drew shared the picture and mentioned, “My banana trees planted during the Covid lockdown continue to bear,” with hashtags highlighting Back Yard Gardening and Food Security.
This post has conveyed a special message to his communities to continue to plant more trees as a part of their daily life routine and remain diligent towards the same.
The residents were seen actively supporting the Prime Minister for this kind and positive gesture. In a comment section, several users supported him and extended their pride for his generous act. A user identified as Luther Clarke commended his hard work and noted, “Appreciating your handiwork”
Another user, Stuart Nigel Versailles, looked quite impressed and encouraged. She stated, “Nice, A small step towards food security. We can all play our little bit of significant difference, Bless up.”
While another user, Jacqueline Kelly, noted, “To God be the glory. Enjoy your backyard gardening it will come, Give Thanks, Bless.”
This is to be noted that Prime Minister Dr Drew has been consistent in showing his commitment and prioritising the agriculture sector of the nation. During the previous month, he visited to meet the local farmers of one of the constituencies of Upper Monkey Hill to praise and encourage their work and dedication.
PM Drew further also applauded Minister of Agriculture Samal Duggins for his competent and strong leadership in developing the Agriculture sector and contributing his efforts for the 25/25 agenda.
The 25 By 25 Agenda of St Kitts and Nevis, aims to introduce significant strides with its sustainable island state agenda of the nation. It aims to reduce the country’s food imports as one of its key strategic pillars.
Under this Agenda, the Department of Marine Resources’ objective is to decrease the food import bill by 25 per cent by 2025.
The aim is to develop land-based aqua-culture facilities to raise local food production and reduce dependency on imports.
