Basseterre, St Kitts: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew convened an urgent Zoom Meeting with senior government officials as a tropical system continues to develop in the Atlantic, posing a potential harm to St Kitts and Nevis.
The urgent meeting held via Zoom took place on Sunday, 11 August 2024, to assess the situation and to ensure that comprehensive preparedness measures are in place.
The meeting was led by National Disaster Coordinator Abdias Samuel who gave PM Drew an update on the current status of the weather system. Samuel underscored the potential impact on the Federation and stated the preparedness actions being implemented under the National Disaster Management Framework.
These preparedness actions are made to protect the population and minimize any disruptions that may come out of the system’s development.
Prime Minister presented remarks and expressed his thanks to all the attendees for their immediate response and dedication to prioritising the preparedness and response activities for the potential weather threat.
He further highlighted the importance of proactive measures and coordination among all relevant agencies to ensure the well-being of the citizens and residents of the twin-island Federation.
“The safety of our people is our highest priority. I commend everyone involved for their commitment to these critical preparedness activities. It is essential that we remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions as we continue to monitor the development of this tropical system,” stated Prime Minister Drew.
The meeting was attended by the Acting Prime Minister, Dr Geoffrey Hanley; Permanent Secretary of National Security, Glenroy Blanchette, and Chairman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Board, Claricia Langley-Stevens.
It is also to be duly noted that owing to the approaching tropical system, all the government offices will be closed on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.
The government advises general public to stay informed through official channels and to follow the preparedness measures provided by NEMA and other trustworthy authorities as the situation unfolds.
