St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew along with First Lady, Diani Prince-Drew arrived in St Vincent and the Grenadines to participate in the 8th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). They landed at the Argyle International Airport earlier on Friday and received a warm welcome from several government authorities.
The CELAC Summit was Scheduled to take place on March 01, 2024, at the Sandals Resort at Buccament. It is said to be the largest diplomatic gathering to be held on the Island.
As per the information, PM Drew was among 33 leaders and some 400 diplomats and heads of state at the 2024 CELAC conference in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
While sharing glimpses of his visit, PM Drew informed the communities about his safe arrival on the island. “We arrived safely yesterday in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the VIII Summit of Heads of State abd Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC),” he noted on his official Facebook handle.
Notably, The President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, PM Philip Davis of Bahamas, Prime Minister Mia Mottly and President Nicholas Maduro from Barbados, PM Gaston Browne from Antigua and PM Roosevelt Skerrit from Dominica, PM Philip J Pierre from Saint Lucia also arrived at the nation to participate in the 8th CELAC Summit.
During the CLEC Summit, Issues of peace, South-South cooperation, reparations, climate change, crime and security, poverty alleviation, food security, migration, and the Cuban blockade, among others were the main highlights of the discussion.
Further, the matters of the Israel-Gaza conflict were also condemned during the meeting by Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St Vincent and Grenadines and others.
The CELAC Summit is a regional forum, which aims to integrate all countries in the Latin American and Caribbean regions. It aspires the nations to represent a distinctive voice and establish structured mechanisms for policymaking in politics and cooperation to bolster regional integration initiatives.
The opening ceremony of the VIII SUMMIT of the Heads of State & Government focused on the inter-regional achievements of various countries. It comprised a presentation, given by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Keisal Peters.
