The Ministry of Public Infrastructure launched the Project Preparation Facility (PPF) on Tuesday. The project is named “Transitioning the Water Supply in St Kitts and Nevis to a Low Carbon, Climate Resilient Sector.” It is also recognized as the SKN TransWater Project.
The program was launched in partnership with the Ministry of Sustainable Development and other organizations. It was launched during a consultation to develop a National Adaptation Plan (NAP), at CUNA, Conference Centre to address the impact of Climate Change in St Kitts and Nevis. This meeting was held to address the impacts of climate change and build resilience in the nation.
The TransWater Project aims to transform the delivery of water in St Kitts and Nevis through various ways including, by strengthening the enabling environment for low-carbon, climate-resilient water supply; reducing non-revenue water, and mainstreaming low-carbon, climate-resilient water supply systems.
The Project is a key initiative of the Government to achieve the Sustainable Island State Agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Agenda for 2030. It is a collaborative effort between the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), a comprehensive climate-resilient development initiative.
During the launch, Konris Maynard, the Minister of Public Infrastructure, and Energy Utilities gave a detailed presentation about the project.
“Although we are only at the project preparation facility stage, in which we will see the rollout of feasibility studies, environmental and social impact studies, and stakeholder and gender studies over the coming months, we anticipate that this project can move to full approval and the commencement of the implementation by the end of 2025.” He noted
He also shared that this detailed study on the project will play a crucial role in establishing an overview and presenting a well-thought-out medium-term investment program for water resources.
Further, Minister Maynard expressed his delight and welcomed the representatives from the Green Climate Fund (GCF). He lauded their commitment regarding this project. “I express immense appreciation on behalf of the entire government for the ongoing commitment of the GCF Secretariat, the GCF Caribbean Regional Team, and especially the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (5 Cs), who will continue to be our delivery partner on this important initiative in the coming years, “he mentioned.
