Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Denzil Douglas is visiting Taiwan for the third time to meet with the top-level government officials during his five-day stay. The visit is primarily focused on strengthening the diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Minister Douglas and his delegation arrived in Taiwan on Monday morning and were received at Taoyuan International Airport by Taiwan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi. He will be staying in Taiwan till Friday, March 21, 2025.
According to the sources, Minister Douglas will be meeting with the President of Taiwan, Lai Ching Te and Foreign Minister Lin Chia Lung during his visit. He will also be visiting the Ministry of Economic Affairs where he will be giving a presentation on investment opportunities in his country.
Minister Dr Denzil Douglas is accompanied by Kaye Bass (Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Adina Richards (Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Development), Sean Lawrence (Director in the Ministry of International Trade), Jonathan Kelly (Energy Transition Manager at SKELEC), and Trevor Blake (President of the SKN Chamber of Industry & Commerce).
Significance of the bilateral visit to Taiwan
It is to be noted that the bilateral visit of Minister Douglas and his delegation to Taiwan will not only benefit the two nations in their future collaborations, but will also open various opportunities for St Kitts and Nevis, including more investment opportunities, international trade, and economic development.
The diplomatic ties between St Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan started in 1993 and since then, the two nations have collaborated on several projects.
- Taiwan’s Overseas Engineering and Construction Company (OECC) and St Kitts and Nevis collaborated on an initiative to develop the nations’ infrastructure.
- Both the countries’ collaborated on projects to improve the healthcare services in St Kitts and Nevis, including the United States Air Force Southern Command Lesser Antilles Medical Assistance Team (LAMAT).
