Police authorities in Trinidad and Tobago are investigating the murder of 39-year-old Merissa Edwards. The police authorities found the woman’s dead body on September 26 in a bushy area of Brickfield Road, Couva.
The police authorities will conduct a post-mortem of the victim’s body to confirm whether it was a case of murder or suicide.
39-year-old Edwards was the mother of one child. She was also an administrative clerk at the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies at the St Augustine campus.
Her dead body was discovered on September 26, 2022, eight days after her family reported her missing and two days after a suspect related to her disappearance was found dead.
Members of the Hunters Search and Rescue Team of Trinidad and Tobago, led by Captain Vallence Rambharat and the deceased’s family members, discovered the woman’s dead body in a bushy area of Brickfield Road, Couva.
As per the official police reports, she left her home at the John Eli Road, Freeport, on September 18, 2022, to go for drinks with Simeon Roopchand, a 51-year-old resident of Hosein Street Bank Village, Carapichaima. The two were allegedly involved in a romantic relationship; however, after their outing, she did not return home.
Once her family and friends filed a report about her missing, police officials tracked her cell phone to a gas station, where it last signalled around 4 am on September 19, 2022. Roopchand was said to be missing on that same date.
His dead body was later found in a forested area in Tabaquite on September 24 by the HSRT.
The investigators of her case believe this was an incident of a murder/suicide. Further investigations are still going on.
Edwards is said to be the 44th woman killed in the year in Trinidad and Tobago.
