People stand outside the Orphanage of the Church of Bible Understanding

Haitian authorities are going to conduct a criminal investigation into a February fire at an orphanage which was being operated by the United States-based church near Port-au-Prince, where 13 children and two adults had died.

Authorities are suspecting that the fire had started because of the candles which were used during frequent power failures.

It has been reported that at one point the Haitian orphanages run by the Church of Bible Understanding, were stripped of accreditation by Haitian officials over safety and health criteria compliance and three years ago both of the church’s homes in Haiti had failed inspections but still stayed open.

It has also been reported that an attorney for the church had said that the church, the orphanage operators and the Haitian Government should all bear some responsibility for the accident.

The operational problems and reported poor condition of the homes is glaring because of the revenue wealth and property assets of the church.
