Nineteen families received keys to their new homes in The Stapleton Community on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Human Settlement and Housing, Dr Geoffrey Hanley handed over keys to families and congratulated all the residents who received homes.
The homes were handed over as a part of the St Kitts and Nevis government’s mandate to provide affordable housing for the people. The Acting Prime Minister was proud to be able to deliver homes to the families.
He said, “We can speak in Parliament about housing programs, construction targets, mortgages, and development plans, but there is something altogether different about placing a key into the hand of a mother, a father, a young professional, or a family, and being able to say, “This is yours. This is your home.”
Dr Hanley said that he was pleased to be here as a representative of PM Dr Terrance Drew who serves as the Parliamentary representative for this community. The Acting Prime Minister recalled that Dr Drew followed this development extremely closely.
According to the Acting Prime Minister, Dr Terrance Drew, who is recovering from medical concerns and was consequently not present for the handover, felt immense pride in seeing the project come all this way.
The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew has watched the Stapleton Housing Project go from paper to construction and now to handover of keys. These 19 homes represents new beginnings and security for families.
These 19 homes are assets which will appreciate in their value in the coming years.. Dr Hanley further said that these homes are opportunities for the families to build equity, to leave something for children and grandchildren.
The homes will help the families in establishing a stronger financial foundation for the future generations that would come after them. Dr Hanley said, Prime Minister Drew has consistently described home ownership in precisely those terms.
Dr Drew calls home ownership an opportunity for ordinary people to own a meaningful asset, build wealth, and pass something tangible to the next generation.
The Acting Prime Minister recalled that this philosophy also holds deep roots in the history of the federation. He recalled that First National Hero of St. Kitts and Nevis Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw also understood that freedom could never be measured only by a flag, a vote, or a constitution.
Freedom had to change the material circumstances of ordinary people. It had to mean access to education, social protection, land, decent work, and the opportunity to improve one’s condition. He believed that the resources of the country must be used for the good of the people. This is the same conviction that the government is working with, with respect to housing development and other initiatives that they have taken
The Minister recalled other housing projects which are being realised in different parts of the country as of today, including the Gillard’s Meadows, Harry Phipps and other communities.
According to Dr Hanley, 102 homes are under active construction in several parts of the country including three duplexes, one four story building with eight apartments and other key projects which are ongoing in different parts of the country.
