Basseterre: Traffic and law enforcement officers in St. Kitts and Nevis received the “go ahead” in ticketing persons violating public health and safety protocols intended to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Superintendent of Police Cromwell Williams spoke on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, about the case at the National Emergency Operations Center COVID-19 Briefing.

“If your passenger buses have more than 50 percent passenger volume, the driver can get tickets. If the passengers do not wear masks in the bus, the passengers can get tickets. If you do not distance yourself from society or practice the reorganization measures, you will also be able to address tickets,” he said.

The police superintendent noted that the fines on the tickets, also known as fixed fine notices, range from $100 to $500.

“We ask that people avoid these fines,” Williams said. “We have been delaying the use of these tickets for a long time. That means we did not want to use it, so you just have to follow the instructions and protocols, then we do not have to use these tickets.”

Persons are reminded that the legal requirements for the proper wearing of a face mask include the wearing of a face covering that completely covers the nose and mouth.

Fixed fine notices for violations of the public safety regulations of COVID-19 were first introduced in August 2020.

Health authorities are currently conducting an extensive contact detection, quarantine and testing exercise designed to break the distribution chain among a group of COVID-19 cases. The number of active cases stands at 19 with 45 repairs and no deaths.
