Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew has extended his sadness on the tragedy that happened in Guyana. MV Barim Ferry capsized at sea while the vehicle was carrying over 116 passengers and 17 members of the crew when it capsized Late Saturday Night.
A rescue effort was launched after the ferry capsized and the authorities have been engaged in finding and rescuing the people.
As per the most recent updates on the matter, the officials have shared that they have rescued 67 individuals for the 41 men, 11 women & 15 children. The authorities have shared that the search area has been expanded to cover more sea area.
According to the information being shared by the authorities from Guyana, they have deployed vessels with scanners and divers to boost the search for survivors after the incident. The authorities have shared that the survivors have been sharing several accounts of what transpired
The MV Barima was sailing from the capital, Georgetown, along the North Atlantic coast to Port Kaituma. At this point, authorities received a distress call at 11:01 p.m. (0301 GMT). Shortly ater which prompted a search and rescue operation involving state and private boats, Public Works Minister Juan Edghill said on Facebook.
Authorities said the vessel capsized near the Pomeroon River.
Edghill said the vessel was fitted with 250 life jackets, two rigid life rafts and six inflatable life rafts. The authorities have shared that the whole region is sending their condolences and offering their support to the people of the island.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew, along with the government and people of St Kitts and Nevis has expressed his own sadness on the unfortunate situation. The Prime Minister said, “My thoughts and prayers are with the people and Government of Guyana, especially the families who are anxiously waiting for news of their loved ones.”
He further said that he continues to pray for the people who have been rescued and the courageous first responders who continue their search and rescue efforts under difficult circumstances.
He further said, The people and government of St. Kitts and Nevis stand with our brothers and sisters in Guyana, sharing in their sorrow and hoping for the best possible outcome for all those still unaccounted for.
