Senator Isalean Phillip, who handles the responsibility for social development has spoken to the member of he national assembly to share an update on the closure and remediation efforts at the Cayon Community Centre. The community center is also the residence of the Cayon Post Office and the rehabilitation of the structure was addressed during the national Assembly address which has been working with the international partners.
The officials have shared that the community centre was closed for restoration and rehabilitation. The officials have shared that they had conducted fair quality tests in the community center after which they found large amounts of mold on both the floors of the building.
Minister Isalean Phillip said that in order to maintain the safety of the people of the country, the facility was temporarily closed. The government wanted to make sure that people who accessed the building on a regular basis were not exposed to health problems.
The officials have shared that after the closure of the community center they made extensive efforts to identify and eliminate the sources of the mold. The officials have shared that they wanted to make sure the mold does not return.
The work included repair and recapping of a leaking roof, professional mold remediation, installation of new appliances and air conditioning units, extensive cleaning, repainting, repair of the fence, reconnection of the cistern, and replacement of all wooden doors, furniture, and other fixtures.
The officials have shared that after they had done the work, they conducted the air quality tests. The results suggested that the mold presence was still above the safe levels.
At this point, the Ministry of Social Development engaged other stakeholders and the work had to be started once more. The Minister confirmed that the other sources of moisture had been eliminated and their focus was now on the roof of the community centre.
The officials have shared that the remedial work for the building is expected to start in 2026. The Minister has extended her sincere apologies to the people of the island for the benefit of the organization.
