12-year-old Greyson Burrell became the first sailor from St Kitts and Nevis to qualify for and compete in an Optimist North American Championship. The participation of the youngster is a historic milestone for the sailing sector in the twin island federation.
The multi-sport athlete participated in the 2026 Optimist North American Championship held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from May 21–28. The youngster has made the nation proud with his performance at the event.
Prior to his participation at the championship, Burre finished in the second-place in a cycling championship in Anguilla. Greyson qualified to represent St. Kitts and Nevis at one of the most prestigious youth sailing events in the region.Â
The Optimist North American Championship saw 172 of the top Optimist sailors from across North America and the Caribbean competing. After a qualification series, which was described as highly competitive by the organisers of the championship, sailors were divided into Gold, Silver, and Bronze fleets. The selection was based on performances of all the athletes.Â
Greyson was placed in the Bronze Fleet and secured a commendable 20th-place finish where he was competing with 57 sailors. The authorities believe that Burrell was able to gain valuable experience against some of the region’s strongest young competitors.
He completed in the championship for one week and was faced with several challenges including significant differences in environment, cold weather, strong currents and much more. The St Kitts Sailing Association and Yacht Club stakeholders assert that the performance and result of the championship made the nation proud, His participation at the North American Championship is not only a personal accomplishment but a matter of inspiration.Â
