Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew’s Advisor Ediniborough and Economist Henry have expressed their concerns on the increasing cost of living crisis which the community is facing. The authorities have argued that the higher the minimum wage is, the higher the eventual cost of living would become.
Notably, St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party is the only political party to have increased minimum wage of the people. This, among many of their other initiatives is proof that the government understands the people’s struggle with the cost of living crisis.
The economic experts have called for better safeguards to make sure that the benefit of the higher minimum wage reaches the right people. Currently, St Kitts and Nevis is paying their workforce the highest Minimum wage in the OECS region, which is a massive milestone for the people.
However, some economic experts have called for caution as the costs and prices of some of the things are also increasing significantly. The reason for this is that the private sector is jumping prices indiscriminately.
The government is actively working on finding a solution to the problem by instituting safeguards. The advisor to the Prime Minister, Austin Ediniborough has asked the government to work on finding a legitimate solution to this issue.
He has highlighted that the government has to implement quick checks on the prices that the things are being sold at. Any untoward increase in the prices should be flagged immediately by the authorities.
This, according to the Prime Minister’s Advisor, is the right way to make sure that the benefits of wage increase can be given to the people of the island. Another major issue in the rising cost of living crisis is the increasing international tariffs, which are causing unprecedented price rise.
The authorities have shared that it is crucial that the officers take responsibility of protecting the people against outside forces. To this end, the government has already started working, with the introduction of VAT discount days during high volume shopping periods.
Another initiative which is helping the people economically is the budget boost wallet, which has helped hundreds of families. These initiatives are being taken regularly to support the people in a time of high cost of living.
