Geoffrey Hanley Launches Child Month 2026, Emphasising Nutrition, Movement and Rest

Deputy Prime Minister Geoffrey Hanley delivered a national address on the opening of the Child’s Month 2026. Dr Hanley also handles the responsibility for the ministry of Education, Youth Development at al. The 2026 edition of the child month is the 41st edition of the event for the island nation, highlighting the long standing history of the commemoration for the people of the country. 

The Child Month is a crucial event for the recognition of the importance of the youngsters of the country. The Minister shared the theme for the 41st edition of the Child Month, “Fueling our bodies with the best: Good Nutrition, Movement and Rest.”

The theme of the year’s commemoration highlights the focus of the administration towards the health and wellbeing of the island. 

Minister Hanley said that this theme highlights three important pillars, Good Nutrition, Movement and Rest. These pillars are growth and development of the children of St Kitts and Nevis. The Minister highlighted the importance of all the pillars for the children of the island nation.

Starting with nutrition, Minister Hanley highlighted that wholesome and balanced meals help nourish the children’s bodies and minds. He added that as parents and guardians, they had the responsibility to encourage healthy eating habits. 

The Minister further added, “Our children need food that strengthens them, energizes them and helps them to reach their full potential.” Moving on to the physical activity, Minister Hanley said that children are naturally active and physical activity can play an important role in the physical, emotional and social development of the children. 

The movement can help the children build confidence strengthen their bodies and maintain healthy lifestyles. With this Minister Hanley urged the parents to encourage their children to participate in the various events which have been scheduled for the  rest of the month across the federation. 

The Minister then elaborated on the final pillar, which is rest. He called this pillar an often overlooked but essential part of healthy living. Proper rest, according to the Minister of Education et al, allows children’s bodies and minds to recover recharge and grow.

Dr Hanley talked about the importance of adequate sleep supports learning, improves concentration and contributes to overall wellbeing significantly. The Minister has shared that as parents and caregivers, it is their responsibility to create routines and environments which allow children to get their rest. 

According to Dr Hanley, “nourished, active and well rested children are healthy, better ale to learn, play and thrive.” Minister Hanley promised the 2026 Child month will be both exciting and meaningful. He said that the activities for the month are designed to bring the theme to life in engaging and memorable ways.
