Eight Nevis based fishers participated in the Basic Safety Training Programme conducted by the Department of Marine Resources. The two-week long course successfully concluded with a closing ceremony. The Basic Safety Training Programme began from 11 May to 22 May, 2026 and the formal closing ceremony was held on Friday, 5, June 2026 at Charlestown, Nevis
The program focuses on educating them about safety awareness, professional standards, and technical skills within the island’s fishing sector. The ceremony was hosted by the Department of Marine Resources. The objective of the initiative was to enhance operational competency among the island’s fishers.
According to sources, the programme also supports the fishers to score Grade III boat Master Licence, which was further approved by the Department of Maritime Affairs as the results of the approval by the department participated fishersmen can now operate the boats legally.
Moreover, the training of the fishers was organized by the Maritime Expert, Sherwin Julius. Throughout the program fishers got the opportunity to gain knowledge on several topics including personnel safety, nautical terminology, rope work and knots , social responsibilities, radio communications, vessel stability, man-overboard prevention and recovery, rules of the road (COLREGS), basic navigation and engineering, sea survival, emergency procedures, and fish aggregating device (FAD) awareness.
Additionally, in the closing ceremony participants secured the certification in Basic First Aid, CPR and AED by the World Academy of Safety and Health (WASH). They also experienced the basic training in firefighting and fire prevention. The closing ceremony was attended by Eric Evelyn, the Minister of Marine Resources and handed over the certificates to eight participants. Evelyn also appreciated the organisation initiative which helped in building skills within the fishing industry in the Nevis.
He even congratulated the participants on their achievements in his official social media by sharing the glimpse of the closing ceremony along with a note. He said, “Congratulations to the fishers on Nevis who completed a Basic Safety course organized by the Department of Marine Resources in collaboration with the World Academy of Safety and Health”.
