The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew spoke about the success of his administration’s diplomatic efforts during the March edition of the Prime Minister’s Roundup press conference. He provided an update on his visit to Ghana and the various agreements which the two nations have reached during his trip.
He spoke about the Visa Free Travel Agreement, MoU that the nation has signed with the University of Ghana for improving the education opportunities available to the students of St Kitts and Nevis.
During this meeting with the members of the St Kitts and Nevis media, he also recalled that St Kitts and Nevis now enjoys Partial VIsa Free travel access to Canada. This arrangement provides for the following eligibility criteria.
People of the federation who hold a Valid Green Card (USA Permanent Residence Cards) or have a valid 10 year visa. The people do not have to apply for a traditional visa before a trip to Canada. They can simply fill out an eTA to get entry into Canada. He highlighted that their government has achieved this partial visa free access due to significant diplomatic talks.
He also gave the credit of the developments to the safeguards and improvements which his administration has introduced to the country’s Citizenship By Investment Programme. Dr Drew also added that the changes that they have instituted with the St Kitts and Nevis Citizenship Programme also led to the lifting of the FinCEN Advisory which had been put on the country expressing concerns regarding the misuse of the St Kitts and Nevis CBI.
While Dr Drew called this a diplomatic victory for his administration, the opposition party has presented their own take on the “diplomatic victory”. The critics of the Drew have been claiming that what Dr Drew has spoken of is a 2023 development.
They also noted that the action was taken by the government of Canada and was implemented for several nations across the Caribbean. An expert opinion has claimed that the talks regarding the relaxation of Visa Rules which were implemented on the St Kitts and Nevis in 2014 have been done by the SKNLP, and the Team Unity Governments.
However, despite efforts, no one government has achieved complete success in achieving Visa free access to the people of the administration. The same critics have clarified that they believe this recall of this achievement is because of the 2027 polls in the country looming close.
The announcement is also abrupt as this is not a new development but has been widely publicised at the time of the original announcement.
