Andy Burnham has been officially appointed as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after Keir Starmer tendered his resignation to His Monarch King Chalers III today Monday July 20, 2026.
Before submitting his resignation to His Majesty, Staemer gave his last address as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at 10 Downing Street. In his address he shared the work done by his administration under his leadership. He highlights the administration’s continuous efforts in stabilizing the economy including public service reform and international cooperation.
He further sincerely thanked the public of the United Kingdom for believing in him for 2 years. He also expressed gratitude to his parliamentary colleagues and civil servants for trusting and supporting him during his service as Prime Minister. He shared that it was a great honour for him to serve as Prime Minister.
Moreover, he wished success for the newly elected Prime Minister Andy Burnham for taking the office. He said, “I wish the new Prime Minister every success in building on that work and serving all people of our United Kingdom”.
Keir Starmer is a member of the Labour Party and became Prime Minister on July 5, 2024 after winning the UK 2024 General election. Additionally, before officially resigning as Prime Minister he made the prior announcement of leaving the leadership role in both party and administration on June 22, 2026.
King Charles III invited the next representative of the Labour Party, Andy Burnham, chosen through the international leadership election in the Labour Party. He accepted King Charles’ invitation and formed the new government. At Downing Street he delivered his first speech as Prime Minister and shared his priorities for the rest of his term.
He mentioned that administration is more focused on advancing the living standard including development in the UK infrastructure across all the region. He stated that they also work on strengthening the National Health Service.
