Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley targets vaccinating 10,000 people on the island every week to fight against the COVID-19 virus. This will continue till next five weeks as the Government will be easing the curfews and restrictions in coming days.
While addressing the nation, PM Mottley said that if the process would work as she planned, then the country would reach its herd immunity in a short time.
PM Mottley urged more Barbadians to get vaccinated as she was happy after experiencing the hike in the number of people getting vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. She praised those citizens who came and voluntarily got vaccine shots. According to the vaccination statistics of Barbados, till present, only 6,500 people have been vaccinated.
PM Mottley said, “Let us agree to aim to get as close to 10,000 persons per week being vaccinated. If we can do that, and we can maintain that each week for the next five weeks, then we will have the majority of those persons fully vaccinated before the end of November, before Independence Day, November 30 and Christmas, such that we may as a country, consider then the options of significant review and removal of restrictions that we have in place. There will then be a clear and justifiable case for the Government to take to the doctors and the public health specialists that will allow us to gradually remove the restrictions.”
Barbados will remain under the curfew from 9 pm to 5 am from Monday to Saturday. On Sunday, the curfew timings would differ from 6 pm to 5 am.
While clarifying the 6 deaths reported in Barbados past week, PM Mottley said that those were unvaccinated cases and if the citizens want to help the Government to fight against the COVID-19 outbreak, they should get vaccinated as soon as possible.
The Health authorities have started a mobile vaccination drive in Barbados. This decision has been gaining great success in the country.
So far, about 125,000 people have received their first dose and became partially vaccinated. At present, 3 vaccines are available on the island: AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Sinopharm.
