During the upcoming Meeting of Directing Council of Pan American Health Organisation, Minister of Health Dr Christopher Tufton would lead the meeting as president. Dr Christopher Tufton is the Health Minister of Jamaica.
Minister Tufton is supposed to lead the 59th Meeting of 35 PAHO member countries. This meeting is all about the severe impact of COVID-19 that has been experienced globally and to find out the solutions to combat the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. They would be strengthening the resilience of their healthcare systems.
The meeting will held from 20 September – 24 September in Washington. Here the Council would meet to discuss the transformation of the health sector and some critical issues which include, reinvigorating immunization as a public good for universal health and a comprehensive approach for addressing health threats at the human-animal-environment interface.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Jacquiline Bisasor McKenzie would also be travelling to Washington along Mr Tufton. On the other hand, the Permanent Secretary, Dunstan Bryan and other senior officials of the Health & Wellness Ministry join the session virtually.
Jamaica is expected to compete for a position during the executive committee to work for the term between 2021-2024. PAHO Directing Council would be responsible for advancing the organization’s policies and preferences for technical cooperation and also discussing matters of public health significance, and agreeing on the way forward for the region.
Dr Tufton, during a press conference, informed that the administration of the Pfizer vaccines totals in number 200,000 doses. This shipment that Jamaica got from the US last month is about to finish in few days.
