The British High Commission in Kingston announced that Fourteen Jamaicans had been awarded Chevening Scholarships to pursue Master’s Degrees in the UK.
TThe 2020-2021 scholars were selected from a stellar shortlisted cohort of 50, who were chosen from a wider candidate pool of more than 400.
Chevening is the UK’s Government international awards programme which is aimed at developing global leaders.
It offers an opportunity for future influencers, decision-makers and leaders from all over the world to develop academically and professionally, experience UK culture, network extensively, and build lasting positive relationships with the United Kingdom.
The batch of scholars this year will increase the Jamaican alumni to over 250 since 1984, and many of them are leaders and trailblazers across the Jamaican society.
In reaction to confirmation of this year’s cohort, High Commissioner Asif Ahmad noted that the UK, through world-class universities, is committed to the development of the young global leaders despite the economic crisis from COVID-19.
Ahmad who’s seen off hundreds of scholars in his combined ten years of engagement as Ambassador to Jamaica, the Philippines and Thailand said that they would not let COVID-19 rob talented Jamaicans of the opportunity to experience the life-changing impact of Chevening,”.
He said that he has always been fond of the Chevening programme and has personally witnessed the development of talented, enthusiastic and committed people over a one year period. Each person, from their send-off to their return, has transformed, and they are ready to make a contribution to their country.
He added that this year’s cohort is special, as, for the first time in Jamaica, someone who is aiming for a Master’s in Fashion Business Management is there.
Also, there is a scholar studying the physics and technology of nuclear reactors; another first for this great country.
This year’s Chevening Scholars are: Paris Michelle Barrett Powell; Josan Sutherland; Victoria Grant; Don Dobson; Deanna Rose; Kerry-Ann Harriott; Donald Mirander; Andrea Chisholm; Robyn Stephenson; Jonelle Allen; Suelle Anglin; Oshane Hamilton; Stacy-Ann Wilson; Leroy Montaque.
