For the first time after March, competitive cricket involving players of a Full Member team has returned after a long time because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
A franchise-based T10, The Vincy Premier League (VPL) is being played from May 22 to May 31 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
This will be the first season of the VPL, which is a six-team tournament, which started from May 22 and will be ending on May 31, and is being held at St Vincent’s Arnos Vale Sporting Complex.
Although the Caribbean country has become the first country to resume competitive cricket since the pandemic had haled all the sports around the world in March, the VPL will be the very first instance when cricket will be played in a Full Member region and would comprise of international players.
The VPL comprises of 30 matches, which will be streamed live, with three games scheduled each day. 72 players were picked by six franchises via a draft which was held on May 11.
The VPL was hosted by St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association whose president, Kishore Shallow, is the vice-president of Cricket West Indies (CWI) as well.
According to Shallow, there were 18 positives cases of COVID-19 in St Vincent and the Grenadines, out of which 10 had successfully recovered.
Spectators were asked to practice social distancing.
