Six people have died, and 20 others have been injured as a bus flipped over on a highway in southwestern China.

Three people were found in critical condition following Saturday’s accident on the main road which connects the city of Xichang and the Sichuan provincial capital of Chengdu.

All of the 36 people on board except ten persons were hospitalized. The reason for the crash is still under investigation.

China has tried to end accidents caused by poorly maintained and overloaded vehicles, and also restricting the hours of the drivers to avoid exhaustion.

Better maintained roads have helped to reduce the death toll, although enforcing the rules seems to be less rigorous in the country’s rural areas.

A particular concern has been regarding the school minibuses taking children to class from far-off villages, along with vehicles which transport the low-paid workers to jobs along the more prosperous east coast.
