St. Kitts and Nevis administration commemorated the World Teachers Day on October 5, 2026. The event highlighted the role played by teachers across the federation in the development of the future of the children.
The high level leadership of the country took to their social media to extend best wishes on the international commemoration. The Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Education in St. Kitts and Nevis Dr Geoffrey Hanley addressed the nation to celebrate World Teachers Day.
In the national address, Dr Hanley shared a message of gratitude to the teachers across the island.
The Acting Prime Minister appreciated the teachers for their hard work, dedication and patience in dealing with children. He also acknowledged the long hours of work that the teachers often put in for the children even after schools are over.
In 2026, World Teachers Day is being celebrated under the theme: Standing with teachers, 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our future.
The Minister of Education highlighted that this year’s commemoration of the World Teachers Day also coincides with the sixty year anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO UNESCO recommendation concerning the status of teachers, an important international framework that recognise that quality education depends greatly on how we value, prepare, support and treat the people who are entrusted with the responsibility of teaching the children.
For St. Kitts and Nevis, the theme is especially meaningful, Dr Hanley said. He added that standing with teachers must mean more than celebrating them once a year. It must mean listening to and investing in the teachers and creating opportunities for teachers to grow.
It also means that the authorities work to ensure that the teaching profession continues to receive the respect that it deserves.
As such, the country has continued to expand opportunities for training and professional development. Steps have been taken to strengthen the use of technology across the country’s education system. The nation has also been working on modernising education for both teachers and students.
The Minister of Education highlighted St. Kitts and Nevis’s partnership with the Open University of Tanzania as an example of the government’s work in this field. 26 teachers from St. Kitts and Nevis are pursuing bachelors degree under that partnership
He spoke about the programme in detail during his address and said that it is designed to strengthen qualification, Pedagogical capacity and digital literacy while allowing teachers to continue serving in the classrooms.
The Minister has said that they are also constantly improving the nation’s professional standards and advancing teacher certifications in addition to building a system which is equipped for the realities of a changing world.
The Minister said that there is still work that remains to be done and areas where we authorities would need to pay more attention to continue improvement. The government has committed to continue working with stakeholders to help in the growth and development of the educators.
