The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew delivered the keynote address at the Royal African Society’s 125th Anniversary Flagship Business Event at the London Stock Exchange. The address was focused towards advancing Africa–Caribbean–UK cooperation during the event.
The Prime Minister called on the attendants of the event to work towards a new era of connectivity between Africa and the Caribbean. He has asked the authorities to remove the unnecessary barriers to travel, trade and investment that exist between the two regions.
The Prime Minister has also recalled the longstanding relationship between the two regions going back several centuries. He added that relationships must now be strengthened through practical measures that facilitate the movement of people, goods, services and capital.
Dr Drew recalled that St Kitts and Nevis has also taken the lead in this regard by establishing visa-free access for citizens of every African country. He highlighted that this step is a tangible proof that St Kitts and Nevis remains committed to strengthening ties with the African continent.
He reasoned, “We have done so because we cannot call ourselves family while maintaining unnecessary barriers between our people.”
The Prime Minister further called for reciprocation of the visa free travel between Caribbean and the African Region. The Prime Minister also called on the authorities to establish a structured Africa-Caribbean mobility arrangement.
According to Dr Terrance Drew the arrangement should come to fruition based on cooperation and mutual trust between the authorities.
During his feature address, Dr Drew highlighted the need for stronger economic integration between the two nations. He called for direct air services, improved maritime transportation, efficient customs systems and modern payment platforms that can sustain cross border transactions.
According to the St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister all these steps will improve as well as strengthen the cooperation and relationship between the two nations. He urged that the leaders should work towards meaningful integration for the both regions
