Nevis has recorded a significant achievement by successfully launching the Caribbean’s first space life sciences experiment. The experiment was launched on May 31, 2026, aboard the SSC SubOrbital Express SIX-5/M17 mission from Esrange space Centre in Kiruna, Sweden.

According to officials, the achievement highlights the island’s growth in science, education and innovation and positions St. Kitts and Nevis as one of the islands who is actively contributing in space science and research efforts.

The project was developed under the partnership of the Ministry of Education of Nevis, the University of Zurich (UZH), and the Centre for Space and Aviation Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Officials mentioned that the launching of the projects is a milestone not just for Nevis but it also plays an important role in the wider Caribbean region. They said it reflects that small island states can play a major role in cutting-edge scientific research and technological advancement.

The project’s main focus is to observe how human immune cells react to gravity changes including studying the impact of microgravity and hypergravity on gene expression and cellular function. Moreover the outcomes of the project helped contribute significantly in international research on human health during spaceflight and long-duration missions.

Additionally, the launch of the Caribbean’s first space life sciences experiment highlights the island’s years of investment in capacity building, education and international collaboration. As part of the project, four science teachers from the Nevis were selected, to work alongside leading international scientists. They helped in designing and implementation of the experiment, and got the opportunity of gaining hands-on experience in space research and advanced scientific methodologies.

According to reports, through international collaboration, teachers and students from the island get the exposure of real-world scientific research. Through the project development Federation even established new laboratory facilities and research capabilities. Officials shared that the initiative also has strengthened STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education and built direct links between the classroom learning and global scientific exploration.
