Dr Denzil Douglas, Minister of Foreign Affairs, et al, extended greetings on the occasion of African Liberation Day. The day is celebrated annually on May 25 in recognition of the various african nations’ struggle for liberation from colonial rule.
The day is a commemoration of the struggles of the people of Africa and African Descent against vices like slavery, colonialism, white supremacy and racism. The day aims to celebrate the courage, resilience, sacrifices, and achievements of the African people.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted that the day was an opportunity to honor the struggles of the people who paved the way for freedom, dignity, self-determination, and empowerment.
The day is commemorated primarily in Africa, however, it is an equally significant day for the Caribbean nations. The shared ancestry as well as the shared struggles of the two regions have faced makes this day significant on both ends of the Atlantic.
The Minister took to his social media to extend his greetings for this occasion and highlight the significance of the day. The senior minister highlighted that this year’s commemoration tells us that liberation is not only about political independence.
Liberation also lies in economic empowerment, education, cultural pride, unity, justice, and equal opportunity for all people of African descent.
For the people living in the Caribbean region, the Africa Liberation Day is deeply historical and spiritual. Dr Douglas said that the nation’s roots, traditions, resilience, creativity, faith, and identity are deeply connected to Africa.
He further noted that the blood, strength, wisdom, and endurance of our African ancestors helped shape the Caribbean civilization we know today.
