The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne has announced that they are entering discussions with St kitts and Nevis and the European Union regarding a partnership in geothermal energy. The aim of this partnership is to reduce the cost of electricity within the country and reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.
The Prime Minister made this remark while he was on Pointe FM, Browne. He said that under this programme, they will purchase geothermal power which has been generated in Nevis. Then they will transmit the energy to Antigua through a subsea cable.
The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda has also announced that the European Union is thinking about advancing some funds, a few hundred million US dollars, to St. Kitts and Nevis. This funding is expected to help them to develop geothermal energy.”

In his radio interview, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda said that geothermal energy is a more stable and reliable alternative to fossil fuels and renewable sources such as solar and wind, which can be affected by weather conditions.
“You don’t have that kind of problem with geothermal. You’re getting strong base load energy consistently,” he said.
Browne argued that the use of Geothermal energy could be useful in significantly reduce energy costs across the Eastern Caribbean. They will also lessen the impact of volatile global oil prices on consumers.
“So within the OECS, I’m going to try and do it to see how I can help to accelerate greater collaboration cooperation,” he said, linking the geothermal proposal to wider regional integration efforts.
