Citizens Empowerment Coalition (CEC) has called for the people of the island to participate in a nationwide protest rally which will start at approximately 2:30 PM from the Bay Road Bus and Ferry Terminal at 5:00 p.m. The protest allegedly aims to garner pubvkic support to register dissatisfaction on the special sustainability zones, removal of small businesses from the beach front and alleged incompetence in various critical ministries.
The People’s Action Movement (PAM) is also joining the nationwide protest, showing their own discontent on the above topics. At the fore of the matter, the protests come across as national importance and citizens registering their dissatisfaction with the leadership.
However, facts are different from the base on which the protest is being conducting is looking like political manipulation. So far, the reasons for the protest are looking purely political and bear no factual weight.
For instance, one of the reasons that the opposition has given for the people of the country to convene in protest is “Land Giveaways.” The opposition has claimed that 6 square miles of land in Nevis is being considered for creating an alleged private city, which is simply untrue. Official reports indicate that only 500 acres of land is under consideration at the NIA to be used as a part of the SSZ act.
Furthermore, the act is also being governed by strict oversight from the government and no complete autonomy is being given to any businessman willing to own land in the country. Another halfbaked claim that is being circulated as the basis for this nationwide protest is the forceful eviction of small businesses.
The facts suggest that the businesses were judiciously forewarned and notices were given to the business who did not have permission to have these permissions. The official sources have confirmed that there is further no proof of strong arming in the businesses in any way.
The people are also of the opinion that the protest is nothing but a way of creating chaos. A commenter, Selvin Richardson claimed that the objectives of the March lacks rhythm, cohesion, focus, and seemingly political agenda
