The Nationwide Protest called by the three party opposition, People’s Labour Party, People’s Action Movement and the newly formed Citizens Empowerment Coalition (CEC) was a massive failure. Even after weeks of social media noise around the protest, the streets of St Kitts and Nevis were empty when the day of the protest arrived.
The people had been sceptical about the protest since the initial announcement of the plans and had been claiming that this protest is nothing but a means to create chaos and bring panic in the country.
Even though the opposition was spreading the word for weeks regarding this protest, on the day of the gathering, the turnout was so small it was almost embarrassing. Moreover, the leader of the People’s Labour Party (PLP), Dr Timothy Harris, who was one of the faces of the protest did not attend the event.
With their absence from what was being marketed as the biggest protest since 2014., the people of St Kitts and Nevis have shown their preference. The protest, at its roots, was started with some misinterpreted facts which suggests that the people of the country were misguided into supporting a political cause without being given the full context on the matter.
The fact that the people of the country were sceptical about how important it is for the people to support the nationwide protest as of now. People, at the time of the initial announcement had also urged that alternate pathways should be explored.
The nation has shown their faith in the administration of St Kitts and Nevis and have refused to be swayed by the manipulations of the opposition party. The people know how to look for facts on their own and do not want to be swayed by unnecessary manipulations.
The incumbent administration has been working well and they have solved several issues which were being ignored for years before Dr Terrance Drew and his team came into power. The protest, driven purely on political misinformation was described as an underwhelming attempt of the opposition to drive negativity against the incumbent administration.
