Birmingham Association of Saint Kitts and Nevis Descendants (ASKaND) organized Heritage Day in Birmingham to pay tribute to the history and culture of St Kitts and Nevis. The event opened on Monday and was geared towards highlighting the offerings of St Kitts and Nevis including their language, food, music and dance et al.
Counsellor at the St. Kitts and Nevis High Commission in London, Thouvia France delivered the opening remarks at the Heritage Day calling it a crucial day for the culture of the federation.
Counsellor France described the day as an opportunity for the whole community to get together and reflect on their beginnings. It is also a day to celebrate the progress that the nation has seen in the last several years.
During the opening remarks, Thouvia France recollected the words of the South African president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Nelson Mandela. She quoted Mandela saying that “our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our nation;”
The heritage day was an opportunity for the peke tp honor the cultures, traditions, and stories that have come from generations of St kittitans and Nevisians. During the Heritage Day, the language of the nation, songs and music of the country as well as foods od St Kitts and Nevis were on full display.
Through this celebration, people of St Kitts and Nevis can learn to honor their roots and become proud of where they came from. People, through initiatives like the Heritage Day, will be able to learn from and celebrate their pasts.
Birmingham Association of St Kitts and Nevis Descendants (ASKaND) were credited for putting together the Heritage Day event. Their tireless effort in making the event such a respunding success deserves a round of applause. NuVybes Band and De Vibes Masquerades from St. Kitts were responsible for the entertainment at the event.
The people were delighted to have the opportunity to revisit their roots and honor their legacies with a day full of music, dance and cultural events.
