The St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) candidate for St Christopher 1 (East Basseterre), Dr Geoffrey Hanley, has demanded that Registration Officer, Keithley Blanchette, rectify irregularities on the Voters’ List for the area he plans to contest in the upcoming general elections.
Dr Hanley queried the removal of names without notices of objection being sent to objectees and Blanchette is reported to have replied that objection hearings were held apparently in secret as Dr Hanley was not informed.
He has made it clear to Blanchette that this was a breach of the electoral laws and is totally unacceptable.
Blanchette has reported Dr Hanley to the police following what he termed “a spirited discussion regarding the removal of names from the voters’ lists.”
Dr Hanley said that he has always had the greatest respect for Blanchette who was his teacher at the former Basseterre Junior High School (now Washington Archibald High School).
Dr Hanley said Blanchette’s actions were further compounded by the fact that to this day, Blanchette’s family and his family are close friends who visit each other’s homes regularly. In fact, Dr Hanley stated that Blanchette is his dominoes partner.
Dr Hanley strongly denies that he threatened Blanchette or any member of his family and has stated his intention to write to the police and the supervisor of elections on the matter.
