St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew officially launched the 90-day campaign against crime and violence on September 6, 2024 at the CUNA Conference Centre, marking a key initiative within the broader citizen security agenda.
The Prime Minister shared highlights of the launch on his official Facebook account and noted that a diverse cross-section of the society came together in support, with representation from political parties, sports associations, church and religious institutions, private sector businesses, law enforcement, social clubs, and other community-based organizations.
PM Drew emphasised on the importance of the collaboration across the political and societal lines, during his address. He also said that it is a collective responsibility that is beyond just political matter.
He highlighted the presence of the leadership of the other St Kitts and Nevis political parties, like the People’s Action Movement (PAM), People’s Labour Party (PLP), and the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP).
The Senator and Co-Chair of the Task Force on Citizen Security, Isalean Philip also shared a video of the launch and noted that through this 90-Day Campaign, the government is taking the lead to facilitate an all of society approach to combat violence and crime at its root.
Prime Minister Drew also stated that the government is commitment to addressing crime and for that they have created an inter-ministerial secretariat tasked with engaging all sectors of society.
“We will create from the inter-ministerial aspect of the government’s secretariat, which we have started already. The secretariat will reach out to all in our society who want to contribute positively to resolving this matter,” the PM announced.
Notably, the launch event also featured a presentation by USAID, offering a deep analysis of gang activity and violence in St Kitts and Nevis. This data approach gives a clear picture of the current situation and is critical to creating long-term solutions.
Prime Minister Terrance Drew urged the island nation to come together in the fight against the crime as this would take the collective efforts of the entire society to ensure the safety and well-being of all the citizens.
