Basseterre, St Kitts: Prime Minister and the Minister of National Security, Dr Terrance Drew, is set to host a crucial meeting with community leaders and stakeholders tomorrow ahead of the 90-day campaign on citizen security.
PM Drew, through his official social media account, noted that he has invited a number of organisations, including all political parties on both St Kitts and Nevis, to a national stakeholder meeting tomorrow, August 23, 2024.
This meeting that will bring a wider section of the community together, is to be hosted aimed at setting the stage for a national consultation and a 90-day campaign focusing on security of the citizens.
This significant meet marks the commencement of a long-lasting approach to addressing the surge in violence and crime rate in St Kitts and Nevis.
“For a number of years now, I have been an advocate for a whole of society approach to deal with crime and violence as a national issue, as it cannot be dealt with effectively as a partisan political matter,” said the Minister of National Security.
The Prime Minister also emphasised that this effort will require the involvement of all stakeholders, including representatives from religious institutions, politics, sports associations, social clubs, private businesses, and other community-based organisations.
Prime Minister Drew also mentioned that the issue of crime in the Federation is not just a law enforcement issue but also a public health crisis and to combat these issues the people of the nation must adopt a whole-of-society approach.
He also stated that the administration will also focus on the citizen security and the long-term implementation of dealing with violence and crime from a public health perspective, a CARICOM initiative.
Significantly, tomorrow’s meeting will be a platform for stakeholders to share their suggestions and insights, which will be helpful in guidance of the focus and success of the upcoming national consultation and campaign.
“Citizen Security is paramount to our nation’s well-being,” PM Drew added. “Together, we can and must create a safer and more secure St. Kitts and Nevis for every resident.”
Notably, the 90-day campaign and National Consultation is designed to include various initiatives to address the root causes of violence and promote long-term peace and security in St. Kitts and Nevis.
