Basseterre, St. Kitts: The “Closing the Caribbean Plastic Tap” initiative launched by the Government of St. Kitts with several collaborators aims to address plastic wastage leakage in Caribbean Small Island Developing States.
The announcement of the launch was first made by Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Action, et al., Joyelle Clarke through her official Facebook account and later by the official Government website of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The “Closing the Caribbean Tap” is a National Inception Workshop launched on July 10, 2024. The Ministry of Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment, has collaborated with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)- the global body responsible for the protection of the natural world, for this initiative.
The launch of the “Closing the Caribbean Plastic Tap” project is in corporation with the Italian ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.
The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is taking a proactive approach towards addressing the plastic pollution within the Federation. Through this significant project, the ministries seek to tackle plastic waste leakage.
Similarly, the stakeholders seek to identify and apply solutions for recyclable plastics, develop effective strategies for non-recyclable plastics, and enhance policy frameworks to mange plastic waste more effectively within the Federation.

Minister Joyelle Clarke highlighted that the project focuses in reduction of plastics by quantifiable solutions in five target countries. She also emphasized on the aims of the workshop.
Additionally, the workshop aims to inform national partners and stakeholders on the goals of the project, gather their inputs to ensure alignment with national initiatives.
Consequently, increasing the Federations’ capacity and readiness to achieve the projects desired results and determining a national implementation plan and the next step for the projects’ future.
