Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Saint Lucia, representatives paid a special visit to the Department of Marine Resources in St Kitts on Monday.
The visit aimed to engage in dialogue with the department officials regarding the ongoing technical project entitled “Project for Strengthening Sustainable Use and Management of Coastal Fisheries Resources in the CARICOM Countries.”
As per the information, the Japan International Cooperation Agency is an intergovernmental organisation that aims to provide development assistance to the Japanese government.
It facilitates and assists developing nations’ economic and social development and promotes international peace among them.
It works actively in collaboration with Saint Lucia to enhance the nation’s development and address critical roadblocks to growth and sustainability. Here are some key points about their cooperation.
This Coastfish project, or Strengthening Sustainable Use and Management, is designed to strengthen the Sustainable use and management of Coastal Fisheries Resources in the Caricom Countries. It aims to provide Sustainable development through synergistic effects of resource management activities and fisherfolks’ livelihood improvement activities.
The Meeting was held among various delegations from JICA and the Department of Marine Resources in St Kitts. These include Tamura Minoru, Team Leader, Senior Advisor, JICA and Honda Masaru, Cooperation Planing, Team 2 Agriculture and Rural Development Department, Group 1, Economic Development Department, JICA.
The JICA representatives were given the opportunity to discuss the project with the Director of the Department of Marine Resources, St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as Division Heads.
JICA focuses on disaster risk reduction, environmental conservation, and fisheries development. Its efforts are directed towards diversifying the country’s industry and making it substantially sustainable.
Notably, the following Tuesday, the Department of Marine Resources staff members and its affiliate officers also participated in a food security seminar.
This was organised in an effort to serve the general public better, staff at the Department of Marine Resources and its affiliate offices participated in a food safety seminar.
The seminar aims to educate and train individuals who work with food on proper food safety practices, including hygiene, sanitation and handling techniques.
The department takes hygiene, sanitation and health seriously and works continuously to ensure the safety of its patrons. The Programme was facilitated by the Environmental Health Officer, Mickian Browne.
