Claiming that Prime Minister Timothy Harris led Team Unity government has done nothing for the education sector and continue to fail our young people in the area of education, His Excellency Ambassador Kenneth (Kenny) Douglas, the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) candidate for St Christopher 5 (Sandy Point, Fig Tree and La Valle) said thing will change now.
He said that this year, no teacher or children in the twin-island country should have to go to the educational institutions in the poor conditions, which exist right now all over the country.
He said that there is a large number of schools which have been under utter neglect and in urgent need of repair.
“Most importantly mold is posing a health risk to a large number of students and faculty of the schools across the country – from the Saddlers Secondary School the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC), to the Cayon High School, the Charles E Mills Secondary School and the Verchilds High School,” he said. The mold is a chronic decease.
He said that no one should be forced to work under such conditions especially the teachers. Over the last one year the issue of mold, insect and mice infestation has posed threat to the health of students and disrupted their academic life a lot,” Ambassador told the listeners during a talk show on radio.
“All the focus has been shifted on the playing politics over the proposed new Basseterre high School by Team Unity administration,” Douglas said.
“Around EC$120 million was promised by Harris administration to be spent on one school. In the sake of fulfilling a political promise, they going to construct a new Basseterre High on our nation’s largest source of clean water. However they have failed to find the financial support to deal with the challenges being faced by the schools across St Kitts and Nevis,” He added.
Douglas made a pledge to the teachers, students and their parents that after forming the government NextGen SKN Labour Administration will initiate the extensive renovations to upgrade all schools across the Federation within its first year in office. Through those development works the problem of chronic mold, rodent and infestation will be put to an end once and for all.
