Prime Minister Terrence Drew delivered the keynote address at the 3rd CXC Ministerial Summit in Barbados on 10th November 2023.
Terrence Drew started his speech by telling a story of his childhood and how his mother wanted him to drop out of school. He then went ahead and commemorated the job that the CXC was doing.
”I stand before you with profound gratitude and boundless pride as we convene at the CXC’s Third Annual Ministerial Summit on Educational Transformation. It is an extraordinary honour and privilege to be a part of this momentous occasion,” said Prime Minister Drew.
Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Caribbean Examinations Council for extending the invitation to him, and he applauded the CXC for their contribution to the educational system.
This year’s theme, Reimagining Educational Reform Towards Transformative Agility, highlights that the educational systems must undergo a metamorphosis to equip the students with the skills, knowledge, and adaptability required to excel in a dynamic and ever-changing landscape. This theme resonates deeply with the pressing needs of the Caribbean region, where educational reform is not just a necessity but an imperative.
The CXC’s contributions to the educational landscape are seen as boundless. The knowledge and skills imparted through CXC’s programs have empowered countless individuals to reach their full potential, contributing to the growth and prosperity of the Caribbean region.
”I am reminded of a quote by the renowned education icon Nelson Mandela, who once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” In the context of our theme today, “Reimagining Educational Reform – Towards Transformative Agility,” Mandela’s words resonate deeply. We must recognize that education is not merely about imparting knowledge but about instilling our students’ capacity for transformation and agility,” quoted Terrence Drew.
In the Caribbean, the educational system needs to be reformed, reflecting diversity and equipping a solid foundation while fostering a culture of lifelong learning and adaptability.
The Caribbean Examinations Council has made several transformative contributions to the Caribbean region over the years .it has developed standardized examinations and qualifications recognized and admired across the Caribbean region and the world. These qualifications provided
- A standard benchmark for educational achievement.
- Allowing students to move seamlessly across the region and globally.
- Enhancing the mobility of labour and academic credentials.
CXC has invested in teacher training and professional development, providing educators with the tools and resources to enhance their teaching practices. This focus on teacher development has positively impacted the region’s education quality.
Terrence Drew added that the vision and the dream will only become a reality with a shift in education and empowerment approaches. It will only become a reality with the tireless upskilling, education, and relentless retraining of the people.
Finally, in his closing statement, he put up a question where he suggested developing the EQ side and would like CXC to respond as well.
In the prime minister’s closing statement, he thanked the CXC for responding to the needs of people and wished the CXC success and 50 more years of not only win but extraordinary success.
