The prime minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, recently appeared in a special interview with the media of St Kitts and Nevis. The discussion was hosted with the media representatives on march 2, 2023. In the interaction, Prime Minister commented on the various issues of national and regional importance. In the same exchange, he took the opportunity to address the issue concerning a number of Haitian nationals who recently arrived in St Kitts and Nevis by sea.
The country has been struggling with issues of insecurity and violence for several years in the past. Thus, Haiti’s people are trying to escape the situation in their home country. Accordingly, The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, has expressed his profound grief and disappointment over the situation in Haiti.
Talking about the recent incidents of Haitian nationals arriving at St Kitts and Nevis through the seaways, Prime Minister noted that a person from ST Kitts helped the boats when they were stranded due to an issue with their engine. However, he asserted that the people treated them with respect.
However, he shared that the occupants of the said boat were engaging in Human Trafficking. They were illegally transporting the people of Haiti, and on behalf of the government of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew shared that they would not engage in or support such actions.
Haiti is the most populated Caribbean community, with over 11 Million people living there. The situation in the island nation is problematic, and the other member states in the CARICOM have engaged in several discussions to find a solution for the issue of the fellow CARICOM nation.
Accordingly, Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew has noted that he has remained a vocal participant in the debates regarding the situation in Haiti since taking up the government of St Kitts and Nevis in August 2022. The Prime Minister asserted that he has also discussed the problem with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.
The two leaders discussed ways in which they could combat the Haitian situation. They believe that strengthening the security situation of Haiti is the best way to about the crisis. He clarified that the gangs in Haiti had been empowered, which has left the security agencies at a disadvantage.
