St Kitts and Nevis is working on creating a policy framework to strengthen their response on climate change. This decision of the government was communicated by the deputy to the governor general during her speech.
The Governor General’s Deputy, Marcella Liburd, delivered the Throne Speech at the Opening session of the new Session of Parliament on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. During the speech, Marcella Liburd stated that St Kitts and Nevis administration is “determined to demonstrate strong leadership” in tackling climate change.
In the opinion of Deputy Governor-General Liburd, everyone must work together for the protection of St Kitts and Nevis as it is essential for our “sustenance today and for the future generations of Kittitians and Nevisians.”
Further, during the throne speech delivered by Marcella Liburd, she declared that We commit to strengthening the policy framework for St Kitts and Nevis’ adaptation to climate change.
Additionally, The governor-general’s deputy stated that the country is working with various people to strengthen our resilience to environmental and climate change. These varied people include other small island nations in the region and beyond. Additionally, they have other bilateral, regional and international partners.
According to Deputy Governor General Marcella Liburd, St Kitts and Nevis plan to achieve the desired results for the Climate Change situation by creating more robust risk-mitigating responses and improving the nation’s access to climate financing.”
She says, “St Kitts and Nevis has a better institutional arrangement for advancing our climate change agenda by establishing a new portfolio for Environment and Climate Action.
Liburd promised that (St Kitts and Nevis) will ensure that considerations relating to environmental and climate change are prioritized in development planning.”
In light of the changes instituted by the administration of St Kitts and Nevis concerning preserving the environment, Deputy governor-general also made some additions. She stated that our Labour Government would focus on preserving our environment. She added that it is central to (the government’s) objective of creating a sustainable island state.
Further, she reasoned that suceeding on the (Climate Change) front would mean that the government may succeed in building a green economy with better jobs, better access to clean water, clean and renewable energy, and a better standard of living for all of our people.
