The government of St Kitts and Nevis, led by Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew, is developing policies and programmes to help open roads of success on local, regional and international stage for the nation’s athletes. The plan calls for the development of a sports academy. Additionally, the country is working on creating partnerships with overseas colleges and universities.
During the throne speech delivered by the Governor General’s Deputy, Marcella A. Liburd, she stressed the importance of sports and their development in encouraging a healthier population along with increasing global attention for the nation.
The Deputy of the governor-general made this observation at the opening session of the parliament.
St Kitts and Nevis is working on creating a sports academy with an elite training programme for its athletes. The programme will recruit, develop and train the top athletes of the nation to perform at a high standard so that they can participate in professional sports at an international level,”
The Deputy of the governor-general said, “Our Government will expand partnerships with recruiters from top universities and scouting programmes to strengthen our position in the sports world.
According to Deputy Governor General Liburd, There are great opportunities to create lucrative careers for a number of exceptional athletes across various disciplines. These avenues include tennis, netball, volleyball, football, basketball, cricket and athletics.”
Further, in her speech, The Deputy of the governor-general stated that injuries and illnesses of sports people derailed several sporting careers.
The Government of St Kitts and Nevis considers provisions for such issues in its sports policy agenda. Deputy Governor-General further stated that The Government understands the alarming need for the sportsmen and women who represent the country at a national level to be given adequate health insurance coverage,”
Thus, while pursuing a better way, the country and its government have committed themselves to exploring possible options to provide medical insurance packages for their national sports representatives.
According to Liburd, These steps will help in ensuring that they have adequate healthcare in case of unpredictable illness or injury that may occur as a direct result of playing sports.
Sports are critical to building the orange economy in St Kitts and Nevis.
