Former Prime Minister and the leader of St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party, Dr Denzil Douglas addressed the nation through his weekly broadcast on ‘KYSS FM’, where he discussed the issues concerning the citizens of the nation.
The leader discussed the issue of increasing unemployment in the country. Dr Dogulas stated during ‘Ask the Leader’ broadcast on KYSS FM that yearly around a thousand students are graduating from college in St. Kitts and Nevis whereas only 350 of them are able to get jobs.
“Unemployment among young men is at an all-time high, where people who want to work simply cannot find work. Based on Harris’s own figures, they are creating around 350 jobs per year while there are around 1000 graduates coming out of colleges in SKN yearly, the figures are clearly showing that the supply is not meeting the demand.” added Dr Douglas.
As per Dr Douglas, it is significant that the inhabitants of a country are doing as well as the leadership. “Harris and his family are doing well, and members of the cabinet are doing well, but the ordinary man and woman are living in a completely different reality.”
As per the leader of St Kitts and Nevis party, the current government under the administration of Prime Minister Timothy Harris is not investing to generate employment in the country
Former Prime Minister also spoke about the significance of transparency between the government and the public. He stated that the public must know where the government is spending their monies.
“Massive employment is growing every single month and year because there is a complete lack of transparency with regards to reports that are supposed to be public information, for instance, the social security report which we as the opposition and common citizens are long waiting for.”
Dr Douglas stated that St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party have been fighting in the parliament from past five years to get all the financial statements and social security reports, but all of this is completely late on the table.
