The Government of St Kitts and Nevis achieved another milestone on April 30, 2025 as it officially completed the midterm point of its constitutional term, which is 998 days since Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew and the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party-led administration took office.
The halfway point highlights the government’s bold, transformative, clear, focused, and action-filled journey to modernize the Federation as a Sustainable Island State since August 6, 2022.
Major steps taken by PM Drew and his Government after COVID-19 pandemic
Notably, the government’s performance over the past two and a half years underscores its strong dedication to what focused leadership and strategic policy execution can achieve. PM Drew took three important actions that helped the nation reset after the COVID-19 pandemic during his first week in office.
The first step was the reopening of the nation’s borders to revive tourism and grow the overall economy of the twin island nation. The second step was the waiving of tuition fee at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC). The last step was the establishment of the Children’s Medical Fund to ensure their access to critical medical needs overseas.
These three steps showed PM Drew and his government’s commitment to Powering Progress by taking such initiatives under the ‘Post-COVID Reset.’
Some Accomplishments of PM Dr Terrance Drew in Other Sectors
- Jobs and Economy
PM Drew implemented several economic reforms to the living conditions of the citizens. This includes corporate tax reductions from 33% to 25%, an increase in minimum wages to $430 per week, and initiatives for financial literacy such as the launch of a $1,000 savings account for citizens.
Furthermore, small business owners received a $200,000 COVID-recovery loan and grants of $5,000 through 40/40 Booster Grant Programme.
- Healthcare
The government also invested in healthcare infrastructure, services, and training. Along with the purchase of an MRI Machine and Children’s Medical Fund, they also paid EC$2 million in medical debt and paid for the training of over 250 healthcare professionals.
Moreover, expansion of primary healthcare access in St Kitts and Nevis includes the installation of new cataract surgery equipment, availability of doctors 24/7 at Pogson Medical Centre and renovation of JNF General Hospital.
- Housing and Social Protection
Additionally, a major housing initiative called “Smart Housing Programme” was launched, featuring climate-resilient smart homes and support for low-income workers.
More measures of social protection include: Budget Boost Wallet, LIFT programme, senior care coverage, and a general expansion of all services for the elderly. The camp RESET eliminated the financial barriers of arrears and penalties.
- Education and Youth
Several education reforms implemented by the government focus on accessibility, affordability, and modernisation. Some of these reforms included free tuition, reduced loan interest rates from 9% to 5%, and graduate debt support of $15,000 to help youth grow.
The STEAM initiative—emphasizing science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics—was introduced in primary schools, and scholarships were extended through MOUs with institutions such as Southern University in the United States.
