The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, travelled to the Bahamas for the one-day US-Caribbean leaders meeting co-hosted by the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, on Thursday, June 8, 2023. During the significant event, Prime Minister Drew interacted with Vice President Harris on several issues of importance.
In the backdrop of the uptick in violent crime incidents in the country and the whole Caribbean region, Dr Drew engaged Minister Kamala Harris in discussing the issue of crime and violence within the federation. Gun-related crimes, including trafficking and homicides, were a major topic of discussion during the US-Caribbean Leaders Meeting.
Dr Terrance Drew insisted during the US-Caribbean Leaders meeting that the issue of gun-related crimes and violence is significant. He delivered an intervention on the topic during the one-day event and claimed that the resolution of this issue must be done at the earliest. To this end, Dr Drew shared his approach to tackling crime in St Kitts and Nevis.
Dr Terrance drew shared that he looks at the violence and crime in the federation from a public health issue perspective. The leader of the St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party informed the attendants of the event of his decision to create a task force for tackling gun violence and crime. He will be the task force chairperson, incorporating various social development sectors, national security, and education.
In line with this, the Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris, stated that the Biden-Harris Administration is committed to finding the solution to the increase in crime and related activities within the caribbean region. In line with this, the vice president extended her support to the recently established regional Crime Gun Intelligence Unit (CGIU) in Trinidad and Tobago,
The event played an important role in dealing with crime within the caribbean region. Dr Terrance Drew go the opportunity to interact with the leaders on his approach to curb gun based violence.
