Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew spoke to the media regarding digital advancements in federation during the June edition of the Prime Minister’s Roundtable. During the press conference, PM Drew touched on several issues of importance and updated the media on the developments which have taken place in the country in the last month.
Prime Minister Drew talked about the sale of the Christophe Harbour, which was a major development in the tourism and yachting sector of the federation. The Prime Minister and the media also discussed the newly launched eTA, which would help in making the federation digitally advanced.
St Kitts and Nevis is the first island nation in the Caribbean to implement the eTA or electronic travel Authorization to make travel seamless and easy. The Prime Minister said that in addition to the eTA the nation also launched the bio corridor at the RLB International Airport.
The Prime Minister spoke to the media regarding these developments in the sense that they are creating a more digitally inclusive nation. He recalled that they have seen several developments in this regard in the public service systems. .
With the bio corridor, which was launched on Tuesday, all the details that exist about a traveller within the St Kitts and Nevis systems from the eTA documentation will automatically be verified with the help of biometric machinary.
This is a major milestone for the nation. PM Terrance Drew has said that this is part of becoming the most technologically advanced country in the region. “We are on track and we will continue to make sure that we advance” The Prime Minister Promised.
The Prime Minster further noted that the eTA or Biometric corridor are not the only digital advancements the nation has seen. He reminded the media that in the past months, they have developed government mechanisms allowing people to pay their taxes online.
The people can further also renew their driver’s license online with the government portal.
“We are now moving to the point where you can pay all government fees online and get rid of stamps so when you apply for a passport you don’t have to buy any stamps.”
He confirmed that people will be able to just pay online show up with the receipt and collect their passport. In the same breath, PM Terrance Drew also discussed the national ID digitization.
Dr Terrance Drew said that this is a heavy undertaking that goverment is working on with the Republic of China Taiwan. The initiative will be accomplished with technical of course support and assistance from the Tony Blair Institute
