Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, has urged the nationals to stay safe amid the rising threat of Hurricane Ian. The Hurricane is moving fast toward the state of Florida in the United States.

The Prime Minister has urged the nationals residing in certain areas along the path of the Hurricane to remain vigilant. Further, the Prime Minister also urged them to get familiar with the individual emergency plans and locations of shelters in their districts.

Hurricane Ian was recently changed to a level four threat. The Hurricane is expected to move even upward on the scale to category five as it moves closer to the shore.

So far, The devastation which will be caused as a result of the natural disaster is yet uncertain. Still, the damage will likely affect many individuals, including St Kitts and Nevis nationals living overseas.

The government of the federation St Kitts and Nevis is persistent in monitoring the movement of Hurricane Ian and the other season hurricanes. The government has further committed to helping its nationals in whatever possible way.

In a message relayed to the nationals of St Kitts and Nevis, The Prime Minister stated, “Our prayers are with our nationals residing in Florida, our people in the Diaspora, our students in the Republic of Cuba, and all citizens and residents of St Kitts and Nevis.”

A category four Hurricane Ian has already destroyed Florida’s southwestern coast, having caused a landfall on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

The Authorities are worried that the hazardous conditions could last for another few days. Hurricane Ian is slowly becoming one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in the United States, moving at around 14.5km per hour and winds of 250km per hour.

The situation of Hurricane Ian hitting Florida is becoming extreme. More than 1.5 million population is without electricity. 1800 flights have already been cancelled in the US on Thursday, and the governor of Florida has stated that Ian will rank in the ‘top 5’ hurricanes ever to hit the state.
