Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs Garth Wilkin, along with Samande “Ras Iya” Reid, and John “Ras Kalonji” Jeffers, met and interacted with the members of the “Repair” project. The members who attended the session included Sinead Walsh, Gerard Johnson and Ciarán Ó Sé. Denis O’Brien, Digicel’s Co-Founder Chairman, developed the project.

The goal of the project, Repair, is to provide support to the CARICOM Reparations Commission. The CARICOM needs to persuade governments in the UK and Europe to take responsibility for transatlantic slavery.

According to Project repair, the governments of the United Kingdom and Europe need to Reflect, Reconnect and Repair by committing long-term funding for a sustainable development framework to support education, health, infrastructure and well-being for the people of the Caribbean.

The Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Garth Wilkin, shared glimpses from the meeting on his Facebook account.

This Project Repair’s work is rooted in the current demands for reparations which have come from the various leaders of the Caribbean, along with other regional advocates. Further, the project builds on the 2014 CARICOM Ten Point Action Plan for Reparatory Justice.

Repair aims to amplify the Caribbean’s call for reparations in the region.

The Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Garth Wilkin, believes it is a noble and necessary initiative. His social media update further stated that the Ministry of Justice & Legal Affairs supports the Repair initiative wholeheartedly.

The Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs will be involved in the procedures of the initiative. The accompanying Samande “Ras Iya” Reid and John “Ras Kalonji” Jeffers are also passionate about the cause of seeking reparations for the damages caused due to transatlantic slavery. The enslaved people were primarily brought and sold from regions of Africa, where the people of the west-indies share traces of their ancestries.

Minister Garth Wilkins has committed to providing updates on the Project repair’s progress over the upcoming months.
